Message:
The Global Art Project (www.global-art.org)
asks an artist to
create a work which expresses her/his vision of global unity. My focus is
not directed on something in the future or to some ideal, but rather on
what I believe already IS: the unity that exists, which we take for
granted. The framework out of which I recognize the unity is based on a
truth--we all (animate and inanimate life) come from the Creating One who
calls us into being, sustains our Life, and welcomes us into continued
love communion.
Title Meaning:
The inspiration for
"Goddess" comes from a core spiritual chant." We all come
from the Goddess, and to Her we shall return, like a drop of rain flowing
to the ocean." (from Night Passage, compiled by Liana www.libana.com)
"Earth Wind and Fire" ---for some reason as yet unknown to me---
uses earth as an adjective of both wind and fire. Perhaps this
distinguishes it from solar or spiritual wind and fire ?

Process:
I feel enlivened by the intense colors that
I can produce using watercolor crayons. In order to get the rich texture ,
I use watercolor pencils (sans water) to smooth and move the crayon laid
down on the watercolor paper, creating a painted effect. The physical
process involved in producing the texture--short rubbing motions--soothes
my inner being. In some pieces I use water to create another texture. When
beginning a piece, I sit with the empty paper and wait for a step-by-step
flow from one aspect to the next. Sometimes as I wait I 'see' color and shape which I then draw; sometimes I 'recognize' a shape from the
spontaneous placement of color on paper. "Goddess" resulted from
the former process and "Earth" is an example of the latter
process.
In "Goddess" I started with the yellow circle in the
upper right corner as a focused point of light representing Goddess, a
source of growth and nurturing power. From that creative center Life flows
in its diversity, represented by the fluid shape and variety in color. Upon
completion of the picture I realized that the overall image depicts female
genitalia-- a literal interpretation of all coming from the goddess.
"Earth Wind and Fire" arose from the central blue and white
arcing form that I ' recognized' as a fragment of the globe. The movement of
the yellow shape suggested fire to me, and throughout I sensed a feeling of
wind.
About My Art:
In July 2000 in a class at Shepherd's
Nine, the Summer School of the Noyes School of Rhythm (www.noyesrhythm.org),
I got my first experience of drawing from the resources of my soul, using
recycled art materials. The results were intriguing and pleasing and the
artist teacher encouraged me to continue expressing my soul in this way.
Since June 2001 I have treated myself to the joy of creating crayon
'paintings' of shape and color which both express and evoke inarticulate
passions. Several works chronicle inner transformation and healing effected
in my life through art, therapy and prayer.
