Title: Sky
Wizards
Artist: Mary A. Gravelle
Media: Tempera paint on paper, 18" x
24"

About this image:
I painted this image for the Global Art
Project 2002, www.global-art.org.
The Global Art Project is a
biennial
artist exchange program developed by Katherine Josten of Tucson,
Arizona. She believes that we can help create a peaceful world
by creating works of art based on the theme of global unity. By
artists all over the world creating art for peace at the same
time, we will stand a better chance of the peace making energies
becoming strong enough to eventually effect world peace.
I have created an online store to house
products with the Sky Wizards design. I will forward 50% of the
profits to the Global Art Project. Please let me know how you
like the products. Go
there now.
My Process for this Painting:
I gathered 10 Connecticut Global Art
Project artists at my house, where the painting began as we
discussed global unity. More information will follow on this
gathering, so please check back.
I completed the painting on my own. A poem
evolved as I painted:
Sky Wizards
Onion center, growing, sprouting.
Blue spirits guarding the world
Footprints
Stitches trying to hold it all together
Stitching, mending, surrounding
Weaving the web of life
Safety web, safety net, strong
Holding her up in flexible weave
Of divine net of life
Strength in the spaces
Strength of steel
Herringbone strength
Spirit helpers rushing to heaven
How can we help?
What can we do?
To heal our Mother?
Quick
Urgency in motion
To the Heavens for answers
We need to know NOW
We want to help
Sky wizards
Beings of Light
Spirit hands
Helping hands
Joy
Blessed gowns
Sacred robes
Angelic forces
Gentle winds blowing
Kindness cottony soft
Billowing softly, gently
Crowning glory
Royalty radiates Earth's pleasure zone
Energy radiates outward
Taking evil away
Damage control
Healing has begun
It is only a matter of time ….
Help is on the way.
And we are the help we need.
Rise up, rejoice
Be ye King to all man
Clap, sing, dance to the Great Mystery that is all!
Salute Victory to the Queen
Mother Earth reigns victorious!

About the exchange:
On May 9, 2002, I exchanged this painting
with my partner, Brecia Kralovic-Logan, vessels@west.net,
of Santa Barbara, California, a fiber artist. I happened to be going to
California on vacation and met with her in order to exchange our
art pieces in person.
We connected right away. She and her
daughter, Tetiana, greeted me and my husband, Doug as we drove
into driveway. She embraced me in a loving hug and we were on
our way.
We walked down to her house where she had a
huge bowl of cut California fresh fruit; pineapple, raspberries,
grapes, ets. and water with lemon.
We were given a tour of her ponderosa; a
full acre of land which seemed to span for mile. The way the
land was shaped and all the buildings sitting around it made it
feel much larger. She even has three sheep, a new addition. She
is growing sheep for their hair. She is fiber artist and this is
a new adventure for her; raising the yarn herself and shearing
the sheep. She told us that the sheep's hair would grow to the
ground if she didn't sheer it. Each sheep had a name and they
seemed friendly as pets. They followed us along their cage and
baahed as we walked by. Brecia explained how her daily duties
have changed dramatically with her new additions.
Tetiana took off for the tree swing and
swung way over the hill above the sheep pen. I remember when I
was her age, I would have done that. Now, no way!
We said our goodbyes and left.
She gave me a lovely silk pillow that she
made by using her own process of dyeing the fabric and weaving
and stitching the pieces together; a process that she has
developed over time. She wrote her favorite poem
on the back. Brecia, my painting, me, and her pillow are are
pictured here at left (from left to right).
Here is the beautiful poem written on
the back of my pillow:
All things by immortal power,
Near or far,
Hiddenly,
To each other linked are,
That those cans't not stir a flower,
Without troubling of a star.
Aurthur
Quiller-Couch
We met with her again on the other end of our trip after we
had left Palm Dessert. We met her at the Santa Barbara Mission
and spoke for an hour, catching up with our lives and what
inspires us. She does a lot work with children and had worked
for five years teaching kids fiber arts. She is looking to
expand this venue over the next year.
