Title: Queen
Goddess
Artist: Mary
Gravelle
Media: Tempera on paper, 8' X 5'
Created in July, 2000
with finishing detail in December, 2003
Created during a 10-day training meeting of Painting From the
Source with Aviva Gold
Painting
I wrote nothing about this piece at the time. What I can tell
you is that the timing was six weeks after my brother died suddenly
in a freak boating accident.
Mixed messages appear to me now as I look at it. "Lying
on the riverbank and crying a river of blood," sounds
appropriate for the time. The death of a loved one is so
devastating, one is at a loss for words, much less equilibrium.
Tears flow easily and unexpectedly. Sleep is the only escape
from emotion that is at the forefront of every life
encounter.
This past December (2003), I painted the finishing detail on
her crown of "tuning radar globes" around the feather antennae.
See fig. 6 at left. I named the piece "Queen
Goddess, Grief Put to Rest" as I was finally feeling like
the grief had run its cycle.
Then my favorite pet cat (don't tell the rest of my cat
gang!) and buddy, Dexter Beasley, died quickly from a heart
attack on Dec. 31. So much for putting grief to rest. I wonder if we
can ever put it to rest anyway. Once you lose a loved one, every
loss spirals you back through all the other losses.
On the positive side, looking at the river of blood tears,
Mother Earth Goddess, is more than willing and able to
recycle it all. She can handle whatever we give to her. My
"tuning forks" reach toward the divine and receive
inspiration to continue.
For now, Queen Goddess is hanging at our Hartford studio if
anyone wants to see her in person.

Viewer: what do you see
in the painting or the writing?
