Title: majikal
gateway
2004 VMI Award Winner, tied for 3rd Place
About this work: This was quite the project. I had been wanting a new gate to tie into the trellis which will eventually be covered in wonderful vines. I wanted whatever person found themselves walking down the pathway to come to the gate with a smile on their face and be glad they had arrived. I wanted it to inspire the lighter side of life and to have a warmth that encouraged a beginning process of relaxing. sitting out in the sun. So that by the time they entered the studio doors and crawled onto my table they were already beginning to transform. The details: We used some of the existing chain link fence on the left side as you look at the sun, as a base, built a block pillar on the right side to give some stability to the actual gate which is a security door we cut. Then we used rebar, concrete wire, and lath to create our whimsical form. The substance that we used is called flying concrete, it is a light weight concrete mixture that gets troweled onto the lath. The sun was cut out of dense Styrofoam and covered with lath and then wired onto the door. To find out more information go to www.geocities.com/flyingconcrete After the base was built and it cured I had a good friend Kate help me with the painting part, I told her what colors I wanted and so off to the paint store we went to get just the right shades. Then the fun part began as the gate transformed from shades of gray to what you see before you. If you have any more questions please feel free to contact me...
