Cathedral
|
Title: Cathedral
About this Painting:I looked to other cultures for inspiration for this painting. I loved the Japanese and New Guinea cultures; however, when I found the gothic architecture books at the library, I was smitten by the towering arches, bold stripes, and inner sanctuary of the cathedral. The challenge then became how to incorporate my beloved triangle with arches, stripes, and inner sanctuary. I did a lot of preliminary planning on this design. You can see my drawings, paintings, and inspirations at left. Through the sketching process, my triangle morphed into a pyramid at the top. I have also included in-process photos as this was quite a tedious task involving much color mixing and masking of shapes. At one point toward the end of the task, I took the masking tape off the final painted apex. The divine perfection of design and craftsmanship put me in a state of awe. I had to turn away from it and leave it for a while. Has that ever happened to you? Have you experienced something so divinely beautiful that you couldn't look? It has happened to me a couple other times. One time was at the Hartford First Night event. I walked into one of the events at 100 Pearl St. I scanned the area for people I might know. At the back of the audience on the left stood an American Indian man. His beauty and inner divineness touched me so profoundly that I could not look nor walk in his direction. I'd love to hear your stories of experiencing the divine in its many forms. Email me at mary@wisdompainting.com. People have told me that this painting gives them chills because of the perfectly orchestrated design and craftsmanship. I constructed the triangle myself with the help of my husband and brother-in-law who did the cutting. I glued the frame together and the masonite on top of it and then did all the sanding. I have discovered that I love constructing my painting surfaces. I feel much more connected to the final painting if I have built it from raw materials. Well, I didn't think I had a lot to say about this painting. I've said enough. THE END Please let us know what your thoughts are on this painting or anything that I have written here. Post your comments. Bio:Mary A. Gravelle is an artist who uses the art making process to learn more about herself. As a result, her art is autobiographical in nature. Others can relate on a personal level with her art because of our universal human connections. Mary also has a panache for helping others discover more about themselves through the art making process. This painting may be purchased for $1,200.
