Title: Magic
Mountain
Artist:
Mary A. Gravelle
Size/Medium:
Oil on Canvas, approx. 36" x 24"
About this Painting:
I painted this last semester in Painting III class. Our
assignment was self-directed. I decided to do a Pleasure
Project.
The previous project was on birth and death. One of my class
mates refused to do the Death painting because she would find no
pleasure in it. What? I was shocked! She didn't do the
assignment because she wouldn't enjoy it? Well .... this opened
up a new thought.
So, I would ask myself every step of the way, "what
would please me most to do with this painting right now?" I
reveled in the texture and colors of the paint. I just let
myself do what would pleased me.
The red and pink was especially pleasurable. The colors were
sumptuous and seductive. And they wanted to be painted with my
fingers. I gave the painting anything it asked for riding the
edge of pleasure at every stroke. Sometimes it was difficult to
let myself just do what pleased me.
I think my professor got scared at the way the painting was
evolving. It had gotten to the point of melting into place -- do
you know that feeling? In the zone is another way to put
it.
He suggested to leave it and begin another. I think he was
scared I would ruin it. He had fallen in love with it. I felt
like I had just began to "cook" but obliged him. To me
the painting looks unfinished, although it's growing on me. But,
I won't touch it again. It is done.
I really appreciate the varying comments
that were posted on this piece.
