About this Painting:
I painted this painting in December of 2001 in a Wisdom
Painting and
Art session at Mary Gravelle's studio.
Violet came out of red, black and yellow that first attracted
me to put them on my palette. Violet grew and developed from the
one piece of paper she originated on. She was pictured from the
waist up.
Then over the next two years in painting sessions with Mary,
a vesica piscis grew around Violet with flowers below. I learned
the name 'vesica piscis' from Pamela Jaye Smith, the definition
is a pointed oval shape used in medieval Christian art as an
aureole to surround a sacred figure. I've been attracted to this
halo-type shape that I feel is protective since I discovered the
Virgin of Guadalupe when in Mexico in 1995.
After time painting on Violet, I asked her,
"How do you feel about my painting green to cover the
flowers and then painting new flowers"?
She told me,
"Go on and do what you need to do. Paint and release
your frustrations, I know you'll make it better".
I replied,
"Violet, are you telling me the truth?"
She finished with,
"If it relieves your headache, go ahead."
Though after I painted the green, Violet began crying, tears
in light blue were falling down her cheeks into the palms of her
hands. So I asked Violet,
"I feel like I'm forcing you to paint green. Is that
true, am I forcing you?"
Violet answered back,
"Yes and no. It will make you feel better and flowers
will come when you are ready."
Then all of the sudden Violet and I both started crying. I
asked Violet what she
needed while we both cried and she said,
"Love, loving kindness, gentleness, understanding,
solitude and nature. Natural law will take care of
everything."
Later the books and the baby came. That's when Violet began
to smile. Sometimes I look at the baby and think it's a boy
though when I painted it, it was a girl.
Throughout 2002 and into 2003 Violet was a support to me. I
talked to Violet when I was upset. She helped me to begin the
process of finding my voice and valuing myself.
Violet still is here to teach me things about myself. As Mary
Gravelle posted this painting recently, I was working on a
project at SELF magazine. I looked around the art department
cubical area where I sat and surrounding me were six women, five
of them were Asian women. They are just as beautiful as Violet
is to me. I'm not even sure of the various countries where each
of their families lived before they came to the United States.
We don't talk much other than about the job at hand. I
like their quietness.
