Paintings
by Susan Jorgensen
Left image: Incubating
Right Image: Earth Goddess
Watercolor, 7" x 6" and 7" x 9"
About these Paintings:
These two paintings were painted a day apart while on an
8-day silent retreat.
Incubating.
This painting really is about layers of experience. The
feminine figure is Mother Earth, whose back is curved and whose
head is bent, enclosed by the womb of the universe. The work is
dark and hard and she is feeling cramped and longing to be set
free. The universe groans and trembles with the effort. It is
time and it was not time before this time, and it is happening
perpetually. It is also the experience of each of us giving
birth to parts of ourselves that we haven't yet known. Again,
this is very hard work and the labor is not easy.
Birthing.
Earth finally emerges after a long, dark night. No longer in
darkness, she is a rich brown color - full, ripe, fertile,
delighted to be, free, generous, ripe, ready, open. Her smile
permeates the molecules of her being and the universe, gazing
back, smiles in return. All is well.
