About this Photograph:
Hi Mary! Thanks for sharing the article on creating a garden
journal [A
Good Way to Grow on the Beliefnet.com website]. A couple of years ago I did just that. I have gotten
away from it, but this article made me pull it out and re-read a
few passages. Along with the writings, I had bought a mini
Polaroid camera that came with sticker film, turning the small
1" x 2" photos into stickers that I pasted in with the
writings. Here is something I wrote about my garden on 8/14/03:
"Last night was the chopping party. I unceremoniously
cut down all of what used to be my singing daisies (innocence,
youthful beauty, cheerfulness; loyal love), pulled out the dried
stalks of my flirtatious day lilies, cut back the invading loose
strife, and propped up my white cone flowers and stately holly
hock. I'm sure I looked like a mad woman, humped over,
feverishly yanking and pulling and cutting. Flowers and stems
being thrown over my shoulder to land in a heap on the ground.
Mad as it seems it's a ritual that must done. I miss them
already. Good friends that bring me comfort. But I hope they
will return next season even stronger. My black eyed Susan's are
now the main attraction, along with my red, flaming cannas! It's
red flowers are just now beginning to open. I literally jumped
for joy when I saw the first flower had begun to open. The canna
glows like a bright red torch against this dark background of a
pine tree. How glorious! Two more are also about to bloom! What
a shame it'll be to see these beauties extinguish themselves.
Then I'll have to dig the bulb from it's pot and store them in
peat moss in my basement, like a burial. I wonder if I should
say a few words in their honor before putting them to bed for
the winter?"
Thanks again for making me remember this, perhaps getting
back to it, and also reminding me of my wonderful friends the
flowers.
