About this Painting:
I began this painting while reading Aviva Gold's
book, Painting From the Source, many years ago.
I had added more paper to fill out the body of
water at the bottom of the painting and then abandoned it
shortly thereafter. It sat rolled up on my shelf until this
summer. I had been doing some writing that revealed I needed to
complete this painting along with some others.
It made it to my studio where it sat for another
few months. The time came to bring it out again after doing one
of the creativity hikes up to Heublein Tower.
As I took a step descending along the path, I
looked down and a snake was crawling between my feet. This snake
was small, green and turquoise with a yellow herringbone
pattern. It stared up at me hissing its tongue. I found out that
their tongue is how they determine, through smell, if they have
just come upon some tasty food. Judging by the length of time it
kept curling its tongue at me, apparently I was not a tasty
treat.
The first time the snake appeared on this
painting curled around the woman's feet, I noticed two small
dots on my ankle that appeared to be a snake bite. Strange but
true. I knew I had not been bitten by a snake but it sure did
look like it. This would be no surprise to Aviva as she believes
things like this happen. Painting can be a powerful spiritual
tool.
When it came time to revisit this painting, I
tore away the added paper simplifying the process. The original
painting was done in tempera paint. In an effort to make it
permanent, I painted over the entire painting with acrylic
paint. This was an exercise in retracing my steps and refreshing
the painting.
Painting's Message to me
today, Dec. 18, 2005:
Initiation of the Past into the Future
Snake medicine wraps around your feet, making
new your way, slithering the old, sloughing old skin, shedding
the Past, leaving all behind you that you no longer need.
Look into your future, what do you see? (Helping
Hands)
Snake Woman, it looks like Snake has given way
to Spider at the top of your head, weaving a web helmet.
Feathers grow from the web. Has Spider merged with Eagle at this
point? I'm getting a sense of shape shifting: Snake to Spider to
Eagle.
It's as if the animals move up my chakra system.
Snake grounds me since it lives and slithers on the ground and
is familiar with earth. Spider dwells both on the ground and
above head, weaving webs as it climbs. Spider clears my middle
chakras. Eagle flies overhead able to see all cleaning out the
cobwebs of my third eye and brow chakras.
Medicine Cards:
Snake: Transmutation
"Snake medicine people are very rare. Their
initiation involves experiencing and living through multiple
snake bites, which allows them to transmute all poisons, be they
mental, physical, spiritual, or emotional. The power of snake
medicine is the power of creation, for it embodies sexuality,
psychic energy, alchemy, reproduction, and ascension (or
immortality)."
Wow. The rest of the reading is so potent and
powerful that I cannot put anymore of it into words.
What I get is that this snake has served me a
sacred high service, blasting, transmuting, energizing my entire
being on many dimensions. This snake is helping me initiate my
power as Goddess Creator.
Spider: Weaving
"Spider is the symbol for the infinite possibilities
of creation. Spider is the female energy of creative force that
weaves the beautiful designs of life."
Eagle: Spirit
"Within the belief systems of Native
American tribes, Eagle represents a state of grace achieved
through hard work, understanding, and a completion of the tests
of initiation which result in the taking of one's personal
power."
"In learning to fiercely attack your
personal fear of the unknown, the wings of your soul will be
supported by the ever-present breezes which are the breath of
the Great Spirit."
"In the realm of Mother Earth & Father
Sky, the dance that leads to flight involves the conquering of
fear and the willingness to join in the adventure that you are
co-creating with the Divine."
"Eagle asks you to give yourself permission
to legalize freedom and to follow the joy your heart
desires."
Summary:
Last month I stayed over at Nikki Peone's house
from Farfetched Gallery. She had a snake cage in her bathroom
that housed three snakes. The top snake had shed its skin around
its water bowl. She explained the process to me and how the
snake wriggles and rubs itself against the bowl to shed the
skin.
I was enthralled with this process. I was also
amazed at what the skin looked like. It was clear and white,
almost like plastic or vinyl. Maybe when our old life becomes
too safe and comfortable, it protects us like plastic so we can
no longer breathe. Then, we need to wriggle and free ourselves
from the old.
This is where I am right now. I have been
wriggling and shedding the old. The new is upon me. It feels
very timely that I finished this painting today. It feels right.
It took many years to complete. And somehow, when I took the
last stroke on it today, I felt a locking into place of
ME.
Snake Woman becomes my personal totem locking in
my personal power and legalizing my freedom to move on. Shedding
the old, I receive my new skin.
More on the Snake from my journal of Dec.5:
Animal Tarot: Snake
The Death card - Shedding the Old and Resurrection
Just before a snake sheds its skin, its eyes glaze over. When
snake appears, this could indicate that we are opening to new
realms which might come to us in dreams.
Also, do not trust what you see, trust what you feel. You
will feel the changes arising before actually recognizing them.
When snake comes into our life, changes and transitions occur
quickly and are soon recognized. Release any fears and do not
resist the changes because they bring with them new expressions
of creativity, wisdom, and strength.
They shed their skin when they have outgrown it. I think the
timeliness of snake showing up last night and at Nikki's
indicates that I have outgrown this life finally. The date of
the divorce finally coming to fruition is evidence of this.
